Update on PIRE Websites and Social Media

The new PIRE Intranet

PIRE Intranet: The new Intranet was launched in May, and the Web Team is working to address post-launch feedback from users.

PIRE External Website: In collaboration with PIRE's Information Technology Advisory Group (ITAG), the Web Team has begun the process of redesigning www.PIRE.org.

Social Media: Rachelle Annechino at PRC, working with Joey Dacanay (IT), is leading a group to assist the NIAAA Center Grant and to help PIRE think about areas where PIRE might expand online communication and the user experience. Along with an institutional social media presence, some other possibilities might be: scientists’ use of social media and blogging, public-facing website issues, survey design and distribution, or protection of human subjects in online spaces. As these ideas evolve more will be shared with all of PIRE.

PRC

DSI

June has been a very busy month for two PIRE Centers. Both DSI and PRC have relocated, increasing the savings on the expense of rent. The moves were prompted by the expiration of existing leases and increases in costs. In PRC’s case, it is back to Berkeley as Oakland has become the hot spot in California for many companies—unfortunately, pushing up the cost of rent. DSI is moving into cozy quarters closer to the Brown campus with the accompanying university feel and significant savings.

Paul LaVoie and the IT Team are to be commended for planning and costing out the wiring schemes, coordinating the IT aspects seamlessly with continued connections, and keeping the lights on and the computers operational.

As well all know, this is necessary and thankless task. Congratulations to both Centers. Well done, Center Directors Bob Stout and Roland Moore.
