PIRE at RSA 2017

Health Disparities Workshop

PIRE, in partnership with the University of Washington, sponsored a workshop on health disparities in alcohol and other drug problems.

Health Disparities in Alcohol and Other Drug Problems and Health Equity Approaches: Theories, Methods, and Applications (2017)

Co-Organizers: Juliet Lee & Eduardo Romano (PIRE), Myra Parker (UW)

This informal and highly interactive workshop will convene an intensive working group to (1) review scientific goals for research on disparities in problems related to use and misuse of alcohol and other substances, (2) provide theoretical and methodological frameworks for research and prevention, (3) consider social-cultural contexts which represent challenges and opportunities for advancing the science of AOD-related health disparities, and (4) demonstrate practical means to address these challenges and utilize opportunities with evidence-based, culturally-based, and community participatory approaches. Taking advantage of the meeting location in Denver, at the nexus of the Great Plains and the Southwest, this year’s workshop will focus on issues specific to American Indian/Alaska Natives and Latino/a populations in the US. Also because of the meeting location in Colorado, at the forefront of state legalization of recreational cannabis, workshop participants will consider cross-cutting issues in use of alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs of abuse. Group discussions will enhance interaction and foster sharing ideas and developing future research. Tangible outcomes of this workshop include advancing health disparities research networking within RSoA to advance shared research interests and goals.
