Principal Investigator: Eduardo RomanoSponsor: NHTSA (8/25/2008 - 4/30/2010) Proposal Abstract The purpose of this project is to determine whether data on recent immigrant drivers is collected and if it can be analyzed to identify specific safety problems. This is a problem indentification project to examine the feasiblity of analyzing data to examine traffic safety among recent immigrants to the United States. This project will examine whether recent immigrants are ticketed at a greater rate than U.S. citizens for unsafe behavior, such as failure to wear seatbelts, impaired driving, and speeding. The objectives of the research study are to: 1) Examine how States identify a traffic safety problem among groups of recent immigrants. 2) Identify how States collect information on drivers' citizenship status and identify candidate States for analysis. 3) Determine if State databases can be queried about driver citizenship and traffic citations. 4) Determine if there are feasible methods to mine databases to examine driver citizenship and traffic offences. 5) If determined to be feasible and cost-effective by NHTSA, collect and analyze driver records of recent immigrants and citizens in at least one State to examine differences in traffic violations.
