Hilary Byrnes is currently an Associate Research Scientist at the Prevention Research Center. She received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology, examining the effects of neighborhood risk and protective factors on children and adolescents' mental health outcomes. Previously, she worked at the Center for Health Care Evaluation at the VA/Stanford University, evaluating a new outcome monitoring system for substance use disorder treatment programs. She also completed the postdoctoral program at PRC, in which she combined her interests in both neighborhood influences and substance use. She is interested in examining the health disparities created by disadvantaged neighborhoods for adolescent alcohol use and delinquency, directly and indirectly through access to preventive health care.

Dr. Byrnes currently works as Project Director for Dr. Brenda Miller’s Families Being Together study which examines the impact of choice on participation and outcomes in an adolescent family-based alcohol prevention program. She also works on a study adapting a US family-based prevention program for youth alcohol use and risky sexual behavior in Bangkok with Dr. Miller and Dr. Pam Cupp.
