Proposal Abstract
Injury is the leading killer of children age 0 to 21. It also causes roughly 550,000 child hospitalizations annualy. Despite injur's importance as a health problem and its susceptibility to preventive measures, third party players fund little injury prevention.

This project's goal is to increase third party coverage of and spending on childhood injury prevention. In pursuing this goal, the first year objectives are: (1)to develop and disseminate a strategy guidance document for State and local agencies that are working towards that goal, (2) to perform detailed benefit-cost analyses, with benefits viewed from an insuer's perspective, of at least two preventive measures and preliminary benefit-cost screens of at least three more, (3) to provide technical assistance to at least 25 State MCH agencies and other organizations working toward the goal, (4) to work poractively on the goal with medicaid and private health insurers in at least two States, and (5) to work proactively on the goal with atleast auto insurers or oinsuance rating bureau. Objectives in subsequent years will be similar.
