While 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or "ecstasy") is not new, its popularity as a recreational drug has increased considerably within the past decade. Originally concentrated in Europe and Australia, ecstasy has since diffused to the western hemisphere. A review of the social science literature confirms that ecstasy should no longer be considered a regional phenomenon, but rather one that requires attention from the global community. Implications for international drug control policy are discussed in light of ecstasy's geographic diffusion.
