International
PIRE’s focus is not limited to the U.S. Our researchers are engaged in primary research, evaluation, and capacity-building technical assistance around the world. Our work represents initiatives in Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, and South America. We understand that building partnerships with in-country NGOs and scientists is essential to successful outcomes and aligns with Federal government and foundation goals and objectives. To date, most of our international work focuses on topics related to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; sexual risk taking; economic impacts; and policy. PIRE scientists have developed and evaluated interventions for communities, schools, families, and military bases using several research approaches including looking at environmental factors influencing health. We are also examining public health issues affecting populations such as migratory workers and orphans. To support these efforts, PIRE has developed infrastructure resources for scientists engaged in international collaborative work. These resources include contacts around the world, mechanisms for sharing of institutional knowledge regarding challenges inherent in conducting research internationally, and administrative support for such work. In addition, PIRE scientists have been actively engaged in working with the Society for Prevention Research to form an International Network Forum to support collaborations both within and outside PIRE. Below, are three different categories of information that provide more information regarding PIRE international efforts. |
