Proposal Abstract
Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), has worked diligently to develop an Emergency Plan which is thorough but allows flexibility to meet the various needs of its large student body. The plan provides the district’s 200 principals with templates to tailor to their school’s individual needs. PGCPS proposes in this application to collaborate with community partners, including the Police, Fire/EMS, and Family Services, and Mental Health Departments as well as the County Executive, to review and update the Emergency Plan. Additionally, training materials, including three 7-minute videos (shelter-in-place, evacuation with injury, and crisis intervention) will be developed through a collaborative effort of PGCPS and its partners. The Police Department will use its video studio to product the training videos. Extensive training using the videos will be provided to 200 school teams who will, in turn, provide training to peers at their school site. Crisis intervention training and critical incident stress management training will be provided to school and district teams to provide support to staff and students in the aftermath of a crisis. Pamphlets outlining the mental heath referral and service system available to the community will be developed and disseminated by the Department of Family Services, Mental Health. The project also addresses the need for additional protection for the large number of PGCPS students with severe disabilities. Additionally, needed security equipment will be purchased to improve the county’s emergency preparedness. Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation will provide the project evaluation which will include formative and summative evaluation components.
