Valerie S. Nelkin, PIRE Program Director, is a senior health and social science analyst and manager. She has extensive research and evaluation experience in public health, human services, substance abuse prevention, and traffic safety programs. She is skilled in program and policy evaluation, data collection, and qualitative analysis. Ms. Nelkin has conducted program evaluations in numerous culturally diverse communities across the country. She is fluent in Spanish.. Ms. Nelkin has authored many publications and reports, including reports to Congress. She also wrote the Surgeon Generals Report on Children with Special Health Care Needs, written for C. Everett Koop, M.D. Ms. Nelkin has served on a number of national public health task forces and has given presentations at many professional conferences. Her areas of interest include improvement of service provision to, and evaluation of culturally diverse communities; violence prevention; adolescent behaviors; and community services integration.
